We arrived in Boone, NC at Terry and Donna’s on Wednesday, May 8 and stayed until Monday, May 13. We had a great time visiting and catching up on the past year with my college roommate and her wife. We had a bit of rainy weather but we did manage to get out and do a few things. We also got in two games of Mexican Train – Trish won both of them. And Terry cooked us some great meals – we’ll be back to this B&B. Here are some photos from our visit.
Thursday was the 4th anniversary of my mom’s passing. Miss her everyday, but in her memory we had some pierogies along with our sandwiches.

On Friday, we went to the little town of West Jefferson – the Ashe Cheese Company is there but they were not making cheese that day, so there was only a movie to watch. But we did get our pictures taken with the cow sculptures. That’s Donna on left and Terry on the right of us.

We had a great Cuban sandwich for lunch in this little cafe.

Then we drove up Mount Jefferson to get some great views of the mountains.

And this is Christmas tree country – we drove by numerous farms.

Trish was able to get a kitty fix visiting with Lucy – she combed her and cut her nails so Lucy was very happy too.

We went to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday – didn’t buy any of these mushrooms, but did think the Lions Mane was quite unique. We stocked up on farm fresh eggs and lettuce.

We wandered through the Hickory Ridge History Museum which it right up hill from the farmers market. It is a collection of cabins from the southern Appalachian region from 1785 to 1805. They were having a free admission day and there were folks running the loom. This basic one room cabin was originally built for a family with 13 children, 10 of which lived to adulthood.

And of course we had to stop at the blacksmith shop – Trish talked with the smith, who was new and was scoping out the situation for later demonstrations.

On the left below is the oldest relocated cabin, which is still under reconstruction. And the right is the amphitheater and stage for the Horn of the West production – which is the story of the regions settlers before and during the revolutionary war. I also hear the Daniel Boone makes an appearance – maybe we will be in town sometime when it is running.

We also took a walk at Brookshire Park. There is a trail along side the South Fork of the New River – yes the same New River from New River Gorge National Park. We spotted a few birds – other then the red winged black bird, not sure what they are.

But were were able to identify most of the birds on Terry’s feeders – that’s an eastern towhee, a ???, a house finch and an indigo bunting.

Terry giving Ziva and McGee treats after their walk. They are very cute together – and are a chihuahua and husky mix. And yes, Ziva had ACL surgery so her rear right leg is shaved.

Sunday we drove to Mount Mitchell – the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Given that we are nearly 50 years older, unlike when Terry and I (and our buddy Tina) climbed Mount Washington all the way up from Pinkham’s Notch, we drove to the parking near the peak and only had to walk up about a quarter of a mile to get to the observation platform. The mountain is named for Elisha Mitchell, who died proving that this mountain was higher then Mount Washington. He is buried in the tomb that is behind us in the lower right picture.

After the hike to the top, we also walked the Nature Trail – but other then a lot of lichen, moss and trees we didn’t see much other nature.

On our way back to Terry’s, we stopped at the Green Knob Overlook off the Blue Ridge Parkway and had our picnic lunch.

After taking Terry and Donna out to dinner, we watched some more TV and did our laundry in preparation for leaving the next day.
On Monday, May 13, we headed to Huntington Beach State Park in SC, just south of Myrtle Beach. More about that next time.
Until then, safe travels.
