Boone, NC

Our first two days in Boone were mostly taken up with dealing with the slide issue that I told you about in my last post. But on Wednesday afternoon we did go for a walk around Bass Lake. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed watching the bufflehead ducks. Then it was back to the house for a great trout dinner and lots of visiting.

Thursday we helped Terry with a few chores around the house as it was the day we had an appointment with the Shawn’s Mobile RV repair at 1 PM. It was a 30 mile drive through some wonderful mountain scenery to a Walmart parking lot in Lenoir, NC. The Shawn met us there and in 1.5 hours he had the RV back in sleeping shape. After grabbing a snack at the Walmart, we headed back to Boone and a roast chicken dinner prepared by Terry with a wonderful corn casserole side – yum!

Since we no longer had to worry about the status of the RV, Friday morning we played nine holes of par 3 golf at Willow Creek Golf Course. Trish had three pars and beat me, but it was a beautiful day in the low 70’s and we all enjoyed our day. After golf we picked up Donna and went to the Booneshine Brewery for burgers and beer. Another good meal. After driving through Boone and through Appalachian State University, (Boone is a college town) it was back to the house for Mexican Train dominoes.

It poured rain overnight and we woke up to showers and much cooler temperatures on Saturday morning. But that did not deter us from heading out to the local farmers market to stock up on some veggies for the next phase of the trip – but the only thing that looked good was some lettuce. We then went to the Stick Boy Bakery to pick up some treats to go with our lunch, and a cheesecake to have after dinner. After a walk in downtown Boone and a trip to Publix to pick up the rest of the provisions we were not able to get at the farmers market, it was back to the house for some wonderful short ribs that had been simmering in the slow cooker all day – boy dd it smell good when we stepped into the house. Then it was more Mexican Train Dominoes until it was time for bed.

Our Sunday reservation was about 2.5 hours away, so we had time to enjoy breakfast and finish the Mexican Train game before we had to leave. If you are interested, Trish won the first game and Donna won the second.

Up next are adventures around near Asheville, NC with our friend Catherine – who drove up from Greenville, SC.

Here come the pictures!

Ziva and McGee – Terry and Donna’s husky/chihuahua mix – they have grown since we last saw them
Lucy – they said she isn’t very friendly (Terry’s sister has never seen her) but Trish managed to bring her around

Anne and Terry on the course. To my Boston friends, Terry grew up on Long Island, so yes, she is a Yankee’s fan – I have put up with it for 50 years.

Birds of Boone – Goldfinch, House Finch, Hummingbird. Terry and Donna have bird feeders on the porch just outside the kitchen table. We were always watching the birds while we were eating and saw many more but the camera wasn’t always handy.

The birds had to share the seed with this little red squirrel. The dogs would chase it away but is always came back.
It’s early in the farmers market season so there were empty spots around but we still had fun walking through enjoying the wares

Anne with blues legend Doc Watson. I didn’t sit like I normally so because the bench was all wet. Doc Watson was blind from infancy and started his career busking on the streets of Boone

Until next time.
