On the Road Again

We are on the road again. We left on Saturday, April 15 – yes that was before tax day, but with Patriot’s Day on Monday I was not doing taxes, so it was a good day to leave. We headed to Bloomsburg, PA – to see my cousin Robyn and her husband Billy. It was a long day of driving, so our only stops were for fuel and lunch. We arrived about 5:30 and after getting the RV situated and giving a tour, Robyn had a wonderful spaghetti dinner ready for us. It was an evening of catching up and reminiscing.

Sunday we spent the day touring Bloomsburg and the surrounding area. Robyn and Billy are involved in the local Blues music scene and we saw two of the venues where they help produce shows. We also drove by some places where we used to have Madara family reunions, as well as the house where my dad grew up. We ended the day at the Berwick Brewery for pizza and beer and cider. Then it was back to the house for more visiting.

Monday was another travel day, down I81 to Virginia – but we did get off the highway and drive down US11, which parallels 81, so we got to see some of the smaller towns along the way.

We had another day of traveling on Tuesday, to get to Boone, NC, where we are visiting with my college roommate Terry and her wife Donna – but more of that next time.

Onto the pictures!

Deer walking the ridge by Robyn and Billy’s
This is the bridge we went over to get onto the property – the driveway starts up by that red barn
It is supported by steel I-beams so it is quite sturdy

Trish listening and watching for birds – there were lots of them
The Exchange Gallery in Bloomsburg – they have themed exhibits through the year and welcome art from all ages and abilities. This time the theme was green.
Robyn with some of the artwork – these dividers in the middle of the room are on wheels, so this is the space for more blues in Bloomsburg.
Billy with some of the equipment for the Listening Room set-up

Main Street in Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg is the only town in PA – all other communities are cities, boroughs or townships.

Trish looking in to Kitties in Bloom – they were closed so we weren’t able to pet any of the kitties
The kitties have quite a set-up
Knoebels is an amusement park with an attached campground – Madara family reunions used to be held here.
One of the wooden roller coasters at Knoebel’s. The park wasn’t open yet for this season, so there we didn’t get to go on any rides
This 46 Spring St in Tremont, PA. It is the house that my father grew up in. Looks quite a bit different, especially the porch.
Robyn and me at the gravestone of my 6th great grandfather who served in the Revolutionary War. It was in a family plot, on what used to be his farm.
We drove by several of these coal breakers – my mom’s dad was a miner and my dad’s dad was an electrician supporting the mines.
Pennsylvania goodies. We used to bring boxes of Tasty Kakes home to CT whenever we went to PA to visit relatives. Turkey Hill products are newer treats
This is the main stage and viewing area for the Briggs Family Blues Festival. Robyn and Billy work the green room for the artists.
Robyn, Trish and Billy on the main stage – I wanted to let you see how big it is.
Billy and Robin on the Back Porch stage – so there are two performances going on at once.
This stage is much smaller
We had some good pizza here, along with beer and cider.
Not the best shot, but we saw this pileated woodpecker at our campground in Virginia. Boy are they big.

It was a windy drive on Tuesday – Trish did a great job driving!

Our favorite view – on I77 just after you get into North Carolina – a bit of a hazy day, but still impressive.
Popoki concerned that we might have to use that runaway truck ramp. Not this time!

I do have one other story to tell – which is our latest misadventure with the RV. When I went to make the bed up last Thursday, the slide would not go out. we made sure it was charged up overnight and tried again on Friday morning – no luck. I managed to get an appointment with our repair shop on Friday afternoon, and they diagnosed it as a bad controller board – not something that folks keep in stock. After watching some YouTube video It seemed to be a fairly simple swap, so we had them order the part and send it to Terry’s. I did the install but that didn’t solve the problem. It took several calls, but I was able to get an appointment with a mobile RV tech for Thursday, if we were willing to drive the RV for 30 miles. We jumped at it, and after 1.5 hours, he was successful. We were very grateful, as sleeping above the cab for me, and on the dropped down dining room table for Trish, was getting very tiresome. A relief that we have it solved and will be able to continue the trip in comfort.

The old controller on the left with the new one on the right – you might notice the numbers are different – that’s partially what caused it not to work when I installed it – but the RV tech knew more about electrical circuits and was able to figure out what was going on.

The real Boone adventures coming soon.

  2. This is such fun. I like this set up much better than the prior year’s set up . It’s like reading a wonderful book. That bridge with the steel girders is still rather scary- no side rails.

So much interesting history in your family, Anne.
